Special Award
ORLANDO,
FL (April 6, 2000) - The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) today
announced that Kelly and Coco Miller have won the 70th Annual
AAU James E. Sullivan Memorial Award, Sponsored by LamisilAT.
The University of Georgia Lady Bulldogs were announced as the winner
during a ceremony held this evening at ESPNZone in New York City.
"Kelly
and Coco Miller exemplify all of the qualities that the Sullivan
Award represents," said Bobby Dodd, AAU President. "This is the
first time that twins were nominated and won the Sullivan Award
as one entity. Hopefully, they will both be as successful in the
WBNA as last year's winner, Chamique Holdsclaw."
Kelly
and Coco, identical twins, led the Georgia Lady Bulldogs to the
NCAA Women's Final Four in 1999. Both were named All-Americans by
Women's Basketball News Service, All-Southeastern Conference and
they won a Silver medal at the World University Games as members
of the U.S. World University team. The Miller Twins join last year's
Sullivan Award winner, Chamique Holdsclaw, as the only female basketball
players to win the Sullivan Award.
"It
is an honor for us to have been selected as this year's recipient
of the Sullivan Award," said Kelly and Coco Miller. "We were up
against a quality group of individuals and to be recognized as the
top U.S. amateur athletes is a humbling experience. We would never
have been able to accomplish so much if it wasn't for our family,
teammates and coaches."
"We
congratulate Kelly and Coco - their speed, strength and endurance
- three key characteristics of a great athlete - make them role-model
for aspiring young athletes," said MJ Weldon, marketing director
for LamisilAT at Novartis Consumer Health. "We want to
recognize all of the finalists for their athletic achievements.
The LamisilAT team is honored to be affiliated with the
Sullivan Award."
The
Sullivan Award recognizes athletes who have achieved athletic excellence,
exhibit leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism.
It has been presented annually by the AAU since 1930 as a salute
to founder and past president of the AAU, James E. Sullivan. Past
winners include last year's recipient Chamique Holdsclaw, Carl Lewis
(1981), and William "Bill" Bradley (1965).
Voting
for the 1999 James E. Sullivan Award Sponsored by LamisilAT
was completed by the AAU Board of Directors, the United States Olympic
Committee (USOC) Board of Directors, the AAU Sullivan Award Committee
and members of the sports media. The accounting firm, Accurate Business
Services of Marietta, GA, officially tabulated the ballots. This
year's award recipient received a bronze replica of the original
Sullivan trophy mounted on a black pedestal, depicting a runner
carrying a laurel branch.
