AAU Gussie Crawford Award

AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award

The AAU Gussie Crawford Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented annually at the AAU James E. Sullivan Award ceremony, was established to honor Gussie Crawford, voted the first female president of AAU, as a trailblazer in amateur sports. The award is intended to recognize those athletes whose efforts, both on and off their playing surface on the national or international stage, have paved the way for  great change in amateur sports.

First recipient: Jesse Owens, for his lasting impact on amateur sports
The award will be accepted by his granddaughter, Gina Hemphill-Strachan on the family’s behalf during the presentation of the AAU James E. Sullivan Award Ceremony, April 11, 2017.

86th AAU Sullivan Award Winners: Breanna Stewart from the Univ. of Connecticut for Basketball and Keenan Reynolds from the Navy for Football.

The AAU Sullivan Award has been given out since 1930 to the nation's best amateur athlete. Only one finalist will join the illustrious list of previous winners which include: Bobby Jones (1930), Doc Blanchard (1945), Wilma Rudolph (1961), Bill Bradley (1965), Mark Spitz (1970), Bill Walton (1973), Bruce Jenner (1976), Carl Lewis (1981), Joan Benoit (1985), Janet Evans (1989), Peyton Manning (1997), Michael Phelps (2003), Tim Tebow (2007), Shawn Johnson (2008), Missy Franklin (2012), and most recently, the Ohio State University running back Ezekiel Elliott (2014) plus an illustrious group of past winners.

Previous winners include Mark Spitz, Bruce Jenner, Carl Lewis, Peyton Manning, Michael Phelps, and many other well known athletes.


The New York Athletic Club was founded in 1868. Club members have won 119 Gold, 53 Silver, and 59 Bronze Olympic medals.
